About Northern Harmony

Northern Harmony is the longest running a cappella festival in Canada. 2009 will mark the Edmonton, Alberta festival's tenth year.

Northern Harmony is a celebration of Canadian a cappella. It celebrates the multitude of genres and styles that can be produced without the crutch of instruments, and the amazing talent of Canadian vocalists.

It is also a no-pressure competition - during each show the audience votes on their favourite group of the night and the winner of this vote is crowned the Northern Harmony Audience Favourite group. During Northern Harmony's formative years it was a complete competition - groups were judged by industry professionals; prizes awarded for best groups, soloists, arrangements, etc.

Northern Harmony is meant to create a spirit of camaraderie and is also intended to be educational for participants, allowing groups to learn from each other. Northern Harmony was started as a way to bring together a cappella groups from around Canada in a celebration of vocal music.

Other aims of Northern Harmony are as follows:

  • To build a community for fans and performers of a cappella, bringing people together for mutual interest.
  • To provide an opportunity for people - listeners, fans - to find out what groups are doing and discover other groups they may not have had the chance to hear of.
  • To provide the groups themselves an opportunity to share and learn from each other.
  • To provide groups who don't yet have recordings the opportunity to appear on the live compilation CD which they can then sell to raise money for their own.
  •  To offer groups the opportunity to share their art with people who want to hear it.

If you are in a group of three to eight members interested in taking part in the future, please contact us, or post a performance video in the Video library!
